Chance to play flips ODU recruit to Norfolk State

Signing Day isn’t until Wednesday, but Norfolk State looks to have hauled in a nice catch already. Shedrick McCall has committed to NSU after initially committing to Old Dominion.

McCall originally committed to ODU last summer, but decided to go in another direction after coaches couldn’t guarantee that he wouldn’t be redshirted and that he would be able to play running back.

“I visited Norfolk State a couple of times and I feel like I can fit in perfectly,” McCall told the Virginian Pilot. “It’s a HBCU, so that makes the environment just perfect for me.”

McCall rushed for 2.280 yards and 38 touchdowns at L.C. Bird as a senior in 2016. Another MEAC team, Howard, was also interested but McCall chose NSU.

A two-star recruit by, McCall is the kind of player that HBCUs have been hoping would choose the opportunity to play and get a culturally relevant experience over the allure of possibly playing for an FBS or Division I program. Looks like a nice grab for coach Latrell Scott, heading into his third season at the helm of NSU.

Notes: NSU also got commitments from several other players over the weekend, including Richmond’s Rell Coley and Juwan “Pootie” Carter.
