Hampton’s Quinton Cheivous, seven other HBCU players, picked in NBA D-League Draft


While HBCU basketball players continue to struggle to get drafted in the NBA (only former Norfolk State star Kyle O’Quinn has been selected in the last decade) a handful of players were picked in the NBA D-League Draft over the weekend.

A total of seven player from three HBCU conferences (MEAC, CIAA and SWAC) were selected over the weekend, including former Hampton star Quinton Chievous, who was selected 11th overall by the Iowa Energy.

A Tennessee transfer, Cheivous helped lead Hampton to back-to-back MEAC Tournament Championships, averaging 17 points and 10.7 rebounds per game last season.

Here are the rest of the former HBCU players who were selected.

*Reggis Onwukamuche (Prairie View) picked 17th in the third round by Rio Grande Valley
*Amere May (St. Aug-Delaware State) picked 18th in the third round by Canton (traded to Santa Cruz Warriors)
*Stedmon Lemon (Johnson C. Smith) picked 15th in the fourth round by Canton
*Rasean Simpson (Morgan State) picked second in the fifth round by Santa Cruz
*Ladarius Tabb (Alabama A&M) picked third in the fifth round by Grand Rapids
*Austin Witter (North Carolina A&T) picked ninth in the fifth round by Long Island
*Jason Carter (Texas Southern) picked fifth in the sixth round

    Tabb and May are very good. I would really like to see them do well.
