Winston-Salem State’s program has produced a couple of pro running backs in Richard Huntley and Tim Newsome. Now it appears it will have a former pro coaching its running backs, as sources tell HBCU Gameday former Pro Bowler Natrone Means will coach the position.

This move comes on the heels of WSSU hiring former Wake Forest OC Streed Lobotzke to run its offense.

Means rushed for over 5,000 yards in his NFL career, including 1,350 and 12 touchdowns in 1994 to help lead the San Diego Chargers to the team’s only Super Bowl appearance. The Harrisburg (NC) native starred at Central Cabbarus High before playing his college ball at North Carolina.

Means previously coached at Livingstone and West Charlotte. He will coach a running back group that includes senior Maurice Lewis (1931 yards in the last two seasons) and promising sophomore Josh Glisson (5.4 yards per carry, 4 touchdowns).
