Norfolk State has a successful history in basketball, and they are trying to keep that going into the future by locking up their present coaches. NSU announced today that both men’s coach Robert Jones and women’s coach Barbara Clark have accepted multi-year contract extensions.
Jones has been offered a three-year deal while Clark has been offered an additional two years.
Jones’ deal officially makes him head coach and runs through 2016-17. He assumed the interim role last spring after Anthony Evans left for Florida International. The team is 14-11 with less than a month to go in his first season.
//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js NSU athletic director Marty Miller said he has been pleased with Jones’ performance on and off the court.
“I’ve been very pleased with Coach Jones’ performance as a head coach on the Division I level,” said Miller. “He’s done an excellent job of getting our team to be competitive both within the conference and in non-conference play, despite having to deal with a number of injuries to key players.
“I am very excited to have the opportunity to serve as the head coach for the next several years,” Jones stated. “I want to thank Mr. Miller and the administration with the faith they entrusted in me from day one. Mr. Miller gave me a chance to showcase my abilities as a coach.”
Clark assumed the head coaching role in 2009. Her extension will run through the 2015-2016 season.
“I’m very pleased to have the opportunity to continue to serve as the women’s basketball coach at Norfolk State University,” said Clark. “I look forward to continuing to improve our program.”
