Last fall, the shooting death of Jonathan Ferrell sparked outrage nationwide. Today, the results of his autopsy led the former FAMU football player’s family to file a wrongful death suit.

Ferrell’s mother, Georgia, has filed a civil suits against Kerrick, CMPD Police Chief Rodney Monroe, the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County after it was revealed that most of the bullets that hit Ferrell were from a downward trajectory, which suggests that he may have been either on his knees or the ground.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Richard Kerrick was charged with voluntary manslaughter in Ferrell’s Sept. 14 shooting death.

“We have unmitigated respect for law enforcement,” Ferrell family attorney Christopher Chestnut said during Tuesday’s press conference. “But we also have an unrelenting, passionate duty to root out cowards who use a badge as an excuse for cold blooded murder.”

A copy of the lawsuit is available here.
