For the first spring in many years, there has been optimism about Howard University’s prospects for winning an MEAC title. That optimism will be tested as today coach Gary Harrell will take a leave of absence from the team for the 2013 season.

Citing personal and family issues, Harrell directly to HU students, alumni and fans in a statement.

“After much consideration and discussion with my family, advisers and several people at Howard University, it is with much sadness that I announce today that I will be taking a leave of absence for the 2013 season.”

Harrell, a former reciever for the Bison, took over the program in 2011. In just his second year, he led Howard to a 7-4 record. Those seven wins were the most by Howard in over a decade. Former HU head coach Rayford Petty will serve in Harrell’s stead as the interim coach.

“I want to stress that this is only a temporary leave of absence,” Harrell said, “and I look forward to returning to the sidelines in 2014 as the Bison continue to build a championship team.”;sz=300×600;ord=%5Btimestamp%5D?;lid=41000613802463289;pid=1403708;usg=AFHzDLsOAV0w6EP5Tdu3ArSe-2n4HK-UQQ;;pubid=581878;price=%245.98;title=Tradition+Men+Howard+University+Veritas+Snapback+Hat+Navy;desc=The+Howard+University+Veritas+Snapback+Hat+by+Tradition+features%3A+Heavily+embroidered+script+across+front+Contrasting+brim+Embroidered+stitch+on+left+side+Green+undervisor+Starter+logo+at+back+7+hole+snapback+adjustment;;;width=200;height=250
